Filler – Ep121

Only in a random encounter.
Only in a random encounter.

The things we use to fill the time or buffer showcased encounters from each other are vitally important. This “filler” time has a great impact on pacing as well as character development and is also an aspect of the game that is frequently overlooked for its importance.

Love this episode! This highlights exactly what I LOVE about old school vs new school stuff. The big problem I have with random encounters in say an MMO, is the lack of development afterwards. In modern games you kill the thing and move on, in old games you started looking at said creature as a business opportunity! Its the crazy shit you came up with when you went back into town that made a world for me. The boot shop is a perfect example of turning a curious one shot dungeon element into an entire viable subplot that is 100% character driven! That ability is the difference between a generic class level mmo character and a real developed RP character: The ability to impact the world on the small unplanned scale. I secretly hope (likely not) that the pathfinder MMO finally tries to bridge this gap.

    Good episode. High five!
I also like how the guys are proud of their “true evil” characters. Well that isn’t so true anymore. But maybe that’ll be in a future installment.
