We need 100% more Tree of Woe.
We need 100% more Tree of Woe.

As basic as it is, sometimes we lose sight of the fact that sometimes overcoming adversity makes for a better story and better characters.

So, when I first moved away from my gaming group I fell into the IRC chat based RP games. Most were as dreadful as you imagine, but several had some good characters and even a few actual ‘games’ ran inside them. The single greatest problem I found for most was that they degenerated into 24/7 downtime hangouts where everyone sat in a bar talking about demondog666’s attempts to cyberscrew angelcat314 all the time. ZERO Conflict. Even the conflict that occasionally happened was often squashed by the idiotic moderators who cared more for the stability of their chat channel then actually entertaining anyone.

Conflict is drama, and not just combat. Conflict is the reason we ultimately keep paying attention because without conflict it all gets old and stale. Last game you got bored with, likely happened because it either lacked entertaining and compelling conflict, or lacked conflict entirely. BTW Being hoplessly outmatched by every npc in the world isn’t exactly proper dramatic tension either.
