I have had some experiences with this, just not as many as I’d like. I would like to say that the ‘hanger’s on’ type generally can be a little distracting or detrimental, but those who stick around and get involved can be very desirable additions to the table. Just one lesson of caution: All gamer groups have drama off the table, and nobody needs to add to that by constantly hitting on some player’s wife or husband. I’ve been in groups with love triangles and it neither fools anyone or adds value to the game.

One great positive example is from a Vampire chronicle. Being a group of guys, we all had encyclopedic (book) knowledge of everything combat and our Vampire games naturally reflected this. However, our DM decided to have his wife take over for a while. She developed this great NPC, an old retired arms dealer, and over several months manipulated my character from total mistrust to absolute adoration of the guy. He had guns, money, power… and all he wanted was to sit down with a nice glass of (ahem) and talk about this modern life I was unliving. We all assumed he was using me for political information, but believed we ended up better on the deal.

Only slowly he became more then a contact… a father figure, a teacher…
He was there for me! He came out of nowhere to help in bad situations! He protected me, showed me a new way of living with the curse and all the while I had no idea he was bloodbonding me and every situation he saved me from was contrived by him. In the end, the entire group was at eachother’s throats and completely because of me.

Our group had learned seduction and betrayal. The tongue destroyed what the blade could not. 🙂

A large amount of female players have lists of bad gamer ex-boyfriends, true. However, how you get into the hobby isn’t important. The fact that you stay is.
