Is what was once a subgenre turned into the standard for modern science fiction?

  1. Isn’t SciFi fantasy based on how the player sees it? Star Trek is SciFi but all the tech on the show was based on real NASA theory and planning. Fantasy (dark ages style rp) is based on King Aruthur/ Merlin life. King Aurthur is thought to be a real person, his life and deeds exaduraded but real.

  2. I think the anime you guys are trying to think of is Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Btw I would So love to play a Fullmetalalchemist RPG. Currently I´m incorperating some elements of it into Dresden. The Truth/God/Demiurge can just be sponsor if you play him as a aspect apart from the Almighty (I´m a theologian so I get complicated 😉 )

  3. Great show fellows, but you might have it a little backwards: sci-fantasy has been at the heart of the genre since the pulps, Tolkien fantasy came later (talking modern fiction, not myth here). Take a look at this page at Tor books. http://www.tor.com/features/series/advanced-readings-in-dungeons–dragons
These guys are going through “Appendix N” of the 1E DMG and reading the material that influenced Gygax…most of it seems to be sci-fantasy. Next take a look at the magic items of D&D – quite a few science based items in there – Apparatus of Kwalish anyone?

If you are into this type of game, check out Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea, an rpg that does a fantastic job of drawing the source material (primarily Lovecraft, Howard and C.A. Smith) together into a game setting.

Anyway, love the show, keep it up!
