Halflings – Ep170

Forever, it seems, that one of the distinctly fantasy tropes was the Halfling (or Hobbit). However, lately, these seemingly innocuous beings are beginning to get a little love in other genres. We cannot be more pleased. Halflings are one of our absolute favorites.

If you have some input on this, leave a comment here, via email or on our Facebook page.

You mentioned the halfling use of a sling-staff and that no one uses them anymore. We actually had a halfling wizard in our party that used one when he ran out of spells and was better at i than when he cast spells, so much so that when the character died (GM killed half the party at the time) we buried with his sling-staff as it was distinctngly identified with who the character was…

Thanks for the shout out at the first of the episode. 🙂 I’m pulling a few more items for you guys as Dan mentioned looking for old sears robuck turn of the century stuff. It may be a week or two as I have to do some digging.

You know I’ve just never had the desire to play a Halfling, mostly because of the pure stigma on them. I’ve seen a few NPCs in TSR that were nefarious halflings, but as I tend to play more deviously (true evil) types I just can’t wrap myself around a Halfling for long. If I did a sea princess type where I could be a ship cook or something yea, but for general play I just seem to skip over them.

The one notable exception was my Halfling in the D&D MMO from a few years back. I picked a Halfling thrower/wizard with a Great Sword. Wonderful! The size bonus ment she could go toe to toe at low level and actually kill things while having spellcasting as a backup. Lots of fun there.

I do think we all have some nostalgia for the Hobbit and that rather taints our use of them. I got backstabbed to death by a Halfling once. Nice race my ass, some of them are small and sneaky little bastards.

Jayson was my favourite til he uttered the words “I hate Dark Sun” 😉

It’s Eric’s fault. I never played in the setting for more than a few hours without my PC being brutally slain or crippled.

Yeah the chopping off the arm thing sounded harsh. How old were you guys then, sounds like the sort of thing we used to do to each other’s characters back in our younger days.

I am just jealous cause I only ever got to play Dark Sun for a few hours. Not to mention I bought an Amiga computer back in the day to play the game and they canned the Amiga release.

You just won me back with the words “Superman is my favourite Superhero” 😉 I am catching up on the episodes of the show that were out before I started listening to the podcast
