Grim Dark Future – Ep94

Who Knew?
Who Knew?

We love Warhammer 40k. We also hate Games Workshop and their damn Wallet-Hammer. Their RPGs, by Fantasy Flight, appeal to our insane nature and we talk about the things we like and don’t about them and the universe they are about.

Mass Combat – Ep89

All I know is that I wanna be the guy with the frickin triceratops!
All I know is that I wanna be the guy with the frickin triceratops!

Many moons ago, roleplaying games were begotten from strategy based miniature battles. With this background in war games, and the propensity of massive battles in many of the tropes of fantasy and sci-fi,   it is not surprising when you look at a lot of older RPGs and see systems for massive battles.

Then a funny thing happened, games started going away from the complicated strategy based mass combat systems and toward abstract rules for battles.

We discuss our perspective on conducting mass combat in your RPGs.

Criticals and Fumbles – Ep66

Natural 20!

Not much in roleplaying games elicits more of a table-wide reaction than a critical hit or a fumble. The extreme consequences of a lucky roll can change the dynamic of a combat very quickly. Whether it be double damage, a dropped weapon or the effect rolled on a chart, criticals and fumbles have become an integral part of the gamer’s life. But are they necessary?

We examine the nature of the critical hit and the fumble. Citing examples of how they are used in the game that we play.
